In My Backyard Exhibit
Mar 30 – May 1, 2021
by Walter Dueck

After our move from Manitoba to Nova Scotia in 1985 I sold my antique car and invested in a Minolta x570-35 mm camera and two lenses. Being such a picturesque area eastern Canada was the ideal environment to launch the hobby of photography.
After seven years and with a move back to Manitoba my passion for photographing nature and wildlife intensified. Switching to digital photography, which was more efficient, offered more options, opening new and exciting opportunities.
Exploring the beauty of the varied facets of the natural world in southern Manitoba has been an exhilarating adventure. Manitoba with all its natural wonders and amazing wildlife is now also a province I deeply love. Southern Manitoba is rich with photo opportunities for both amateur and professional photographer alike.
It is therapeutic and inspiring to find a quiet spot in “My Backyard “, wherever that may be. Whether it is beside water, in the woods or next to a meadow, nature in Manitoba rarely disappoints. Photography can be a healthy addiction of sorts, always in pursuit of that elusive perfect shot. Southern Manitoba does indeed encourage the chase.
Wildlife and nature photography opens the mind to a world of wonder, colour, design and detail. It facilitates an appreciation for the created world around us. It is deeply refreshing and calming to absorb the sights and sounds of nature, observing and capturing on photo the fingerprints of God in the natural world.

Spires, Cliffs and Hoodoos - Bryce Canyon, Utah
With the appearance of a childlike fairyland,
this canyon of imaginary popsicles was made by water, wind and time.
It leaves one's mind stunned by the dazzling colour and architectural
feat of God and nature.

Porcupine
Although the porcupine would make a lousy balloon factory employee,
it reminds us of some people. They have good points, but are hard to get close to.
Be patient, we all have a bit of porcupine-ness in us.

Yellow Warbler
The translucent light through the pussy willow
and the bright yellow on the busy warbler made this a beautiful spring morning.
When you get out of bed tomorrow, think of what a precious blessing it is to be alive,
to see colour, to breathe, to hear, to smell, to think, to love, and to enjoy life.

Journey Exhibit
Mar 2 – Mar 27, 2021
by WA+C Members
Each year we show our appreciation for our Members by hosting a themed Member’s Show!
This year the theme is “Journey”!
We are all on a journey!
A Journey defines the passage from one place to another. The portrayal of this could be literal, metaphorical, or imaginative.
As you walk through the exhibit use your imagination and think about the following questions.
- Have they reached the destination?
- Has the journey just begun?
- Is this just a stop along the way?
- What may have happened along the way?

Ambigrams
Oct 6 – Nov 14, 2020
by Kelly Klages
Ambigrams are a form of word art. The design of an ambigram has different interpretations depending on the viewer’s perception.
This exhibit features two different kinds of ambigrams. Some of the designs can rotate– the words change into other words or read the same when flipped upside down. Most of the ambigrams set out on the table are rotational, so you can walk around and observe both sides of the design. A few of the larger pieces hanging on the wall are also rotational. A print-out of these larger ambigrams will be provided on the table so you can see how the design flips.
The other kind of ambigram displayed here is a mirror-image ambigram. These designs do not rotate, but have bilateral symmetry (like a human face) and can reflect across a central vertical axis. If you held these words up to a mirror, they would read the same. Because you can view the effect of this design strait on, most of the mirror-image ambigrams in this show are displayed on the wall.
The collection of miniature Shakespeare title ambigrams on the table incudes examples of both.
If you’re unsure about the type of ambigram you’re viewing or need an interpretation hint, please check the descriptions of the pieces provided. Have Fun!
